About NEF: Responding to a call from village elders to promote “girl child education”, I launched the Nasirumbi Education Fund (NEF) in partnership with the Nairobi-based Centre for African Bio-Entrepreneurship (CABE) at a co-ed high school near the shores of Lake Victoria in Western Kenya. The purpose of NEF is to provide financial and material support and guidance for hard working but disadvantaged young women in underserved areas of rural Kenya, so as to improve their access to secondary and tertiary education, enhance learning conditions and help identify development opportunities so that these youth can positively shape their futures and their communities. NEF offers scholarships, new uniforms, shoes, books, solar lanterns and feminine supplies, as well as mentorship and trainings to build self-esteem, good values, leadership and livelihood skills for female high school and college-bound students. The young women are supported until graduation, and potentially in college or vocational training, if they maintain good grades and conduct. Currently, NEF's programs are primarily supported by individual donors and targeted fundraisers, but I am hoping to launch a social enterprise to provide a sustainable and diversified funding source for NEF.
